Developer Tips: How to store your TFS username and password for VS 2010

If you use TFS with Visual Studio 2010 you’re probably asked to enter your credentials every session which can get a little tedious.

Team Explorer doesn’t offer the option to save your username and password, so to work around this you can choose to add a Windows Credential.

For Windows 7

  1. Open the Control Panel from the Start Menu
  2. Click User Accounts
  3. Click User Accounts (again)
  4. Click Manage Your Credentials
  5. Click Add a Windows Credential
  6. Type in the full URL for your TFS server (e.g. tfs.myserver.com), your username and your password, and click OK.

Now, when you start Visual Studio and connect to TFS you should no longer be asked for your username and password.

NOTE: These steps should of course only be followed if you are working on a secure, private computer and your company’s IT security policy allows. Check with your IT Administrator to be safe.
